Place Your Orders; Making Christmas Memories

Good afternoon.

The Wednesday Market is open for orders. Please place your order by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up between 3 and 6 p.m. Wednesday. Be sure to check the website for this week’s product listings. Here is the link: http://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

This is such a busy time of year for me, personally and professionally. There are so many special events, parties, and celebrations to cook for so my kitchen is in constant use. I wish that I could share with you all the delicious scents of the herbs and spices emanating from the baked goods in my oven right now!

In years past, the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas have not always been my favorite. The challenge is too much work to do in too short of a timeframe – leaving me in a rather exhausted bah humbug mood. But this year, I am happy, even with the crush of all the work of producing custom baked goods, attending my boys’ special school activities, and attempting to decorate our home for the holidays. Wiser, older friends have encouraged me to “enjoy these times with your children, as it won’t be long until they’re grown!”

And, so, I’m heading into the Christmas closet right this moment to unearth the Nutcracker figurines for Charlie, who looks forward to putting them on the dining room mantel every year. I hope you all have the opportunity to create new Christmas memories with your family, too.

Thanks for supporting The Wednesday Market and for purchasing locally.

We’ll see you at The Market.

Thanks,

Beverly

Thanksgiving has come and gone. We trust that all of you had an opportunity to visit with loved ones and had a chance to partake of the bounteous produce offered by our farmers. Our family celebration took place at my house this year, and it was a joy to welcome 17 members of the Dean clan for an evening celebration. I felt truly blessed and happy to be surrounded by them as we enjoyed the day together.

And now, a couple of items regarding The Wednesday Market “family”:

Please note that Stillmeadows Cabins is back, offering broccoli and lettuce. Welcome back, y’all!

Several customers have asked whether Concord Street Sweets has quit the Market. Thank you for asking. No, we have not – it’s just that we have been inundated with opportunities to cater. Please stay tuned. We will let you know when we will be listing our products again. We love our Market customers!

Thank you to all our customers for supporting locally grown agriculture and for choosing to buy locally.

We’ll see you Wednesday!

Thanks,

Beverly

Be sure to place your orders on time. You do not want to miss out on purchasing a tasty harvest for your Thanksgiving meal!

We thank our local farmers and all of the producers and vendors who make up The Wednesday Market for their tireless efforts growing, baking, and making their products to bring to market each week.

And, as we are in the spirit of giving thanks, please extend your appreciation to the dedicated volunteers who staff The Wednesday Market week in and week out, year round: Anna Evans, Sharon Fox, and Irmalee Wing. Thanks also to Kim Sellers, who we call on to “fill in” sometimes whenever one of us can’t be at the Market.

We thank all of you for being our customers.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Beverly

The frost was on the pumpkin this morning, and, unfortunately, on the peppers, too. Yes, this means the end of the pepper season, according to our friends at Westerfield Farms.

If you browse the Vegetables category, you will see that many of our farmers have cool weather crops, such as greens, broccoli, cauliflower, turnips, cabbage, spinach, and lettuces available now.

Special Notice regarding Thanksgiving Week

Please mark your calendars for our special holiday hours. During the week of Thanksgiving, we are shifting The Wednesday Market schedule backwards by one day. The Market will be turned on Friday, November 20, to receive orders. Ordering will close on Sunday, November 22, at 10 p.m. Pick up is scheduled for Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m.

We will follow our normal schedule during the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s, as those holidays fall on Fridays and will not affect our Market operations.

Have a great Sunday, and we’ll see you at the Market!

Thanks,

Beverly

It has been a busy weekend for my household – soccer games in Pike and Rome and some local catering. All of the driving from place to place afforded us the opportunity to take in the splendor of the changing of the seasons. We saw so many different shades of trees and shrubs – purple, red, orange, and yellow.

With the changing of the seasons, different vegetables are coming to the market. This week we have some of the cooler crops, such as cabbage, winter kale, broccoli and cauliflower. We also have tomatillos and several farmers still have eggplant, green tomatoes, herbs and peppers.

Thank you for your support of locally grown agriculture and for choosing to buy locally. We’ll see you Wednesday.

Thanks,

The calendar turned over this week, and it truly seems that Fall is settling in on us. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for this gloomy weather to lift for a while. We deserve a crisp, sunshiny day soon!

If you browse the product listings for this week, you’ll notice an abundance of greens. Whether you fit in the “I-only-want-them-the-way-Grandma-does-it” camp, or take a more modern approach, there’s not doubt that greens are good for us. I had them southern style yesterday at lunch, with lots of tasty shreds of smokey pork floating in the mix. Delicious with a corn bread muffin and pepper sauce! My brother-in-law Aaron, on the other hand, prefers his greens barely cooked and on the garlicky side. You can give it a try, too. Here is a great link on how to cook greens quickly: http://food52.com/blog/9579-how-to-make-sauteed-greens-without-a-recipe

You may also notice that several of our farmers are offering eggplant. Here is a link on ways to cook eggplant: http://www.onegreenplanet.org/vegan-food/different-ways-to-cook-with-eggplant/

And we have peppers! This weblink features a slide show with recipes for bell peppers: http://www.kitchendaily.com/read/16-best-bell-pepper-recipes

Maybe some of these ideas will inspire you to go to the kitchen and cook up something yummy for your family.

Thank you for supporting locally grown agriculture and for choosing to purchase locally. Know your farmer, know your food!

We’ll see you Wednesday.

Thanks,

Beverly
