Concord Streets is away from the Market again this week. Our niece’s wedding was yesterday, and having done all the catering, we have a multitude of equipment to clean up and put away. Then we are going to rest our dancing feet for a while – it was a great party! Furthermore, our sons Stephen and Charlie are out of school this week on Spring Break, so I am going to focus on spending some fun time with them this Wednesday.

Doesn’t it seem like it’s been raining for 40 days and 40 nights? Where is our rainbow? Stay safe out there today. We’re under tornado watches until 3 this afternoon.

Thank you for your support of The Wednesday Market and for choosing to buy locally.

Have a great week!

Concord Street Sweets is taking a bit of time away from The Wednesday Market for a family celebration. My niece, Jessica Lindsey, oldest daughter of my sister Sharon, is getting married on Saturday, April 18. Jessica is the first grandchild in our family to get married, and our whole family is involved in orchestrating the celebration.

I am catering the cocktail party and meal (Chicken Marsala for 150 people!). My sister Teresa is doing all of the bouquets, boutonnieres, decorations and centerpieces. Sharon, mother of the bride and a baker extraordinaire, is making the bride’s cake and groom’s cake, and is setting out a dessert buffet of the most spectacular confections. The bride and her attendants will be beautifully coiffed and their complexions perfected by Kimberly, our sister who is a master cosmetologist. Wedding memories will be preserved with videography by our brother Jeremy. And the rest of the family – well, we’re just trying not to go crazy through it all.

Needless to say, we have A LOT OF WORK to do this week! Here is a sweet poem/recipe, in honor of brides this wedding season.

A Good Wedding Cake
Author Unknown

4 lb. of love
1 lb. butter of youth
1/2 lb. of good looks
1 lb. sweet temper
1 lb. of blindness for faults
1 lb. of self forgetfulness
1 lb. of pounded wit
1 lb. of good humour
2 tablespoons of sweet argument
1 pint of rippling laughter
1 wine glass of common sense
1 oz. modesty

Put the love, good looks and sweet temper into a well furnished house. Beat the butter of youth to a cream, and mix well together with the blindness of faults. Stir the pounded wit and good humour into the sweet argument, and then add the rippling laughter and common sense. Work the whole together until everything is well mixed, and bake gently for ever.

Concord Street Sweets is back! Thank you to our customers who were so understanding last week when we could not fill their orders. I am finally feeling so much better today!

Here’s hoping everyone has a happy Sunday, albeit you’ll probably be spending it indoors. Maybe you have a good book to read, or a pot of soup to simmer, or if you’re like me, a mountain of laundry to tackle. Let us look forward to sunnier days.

Time to Order; Has Spring Finally Sprung?; And More

Good afternoon on this sunny Sunday!

The Wednesday Market is open for orders. Please place your order by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up Wednesday between 3 and 6 p.m. Please see the website for all of this week’s product listings. Here is the link: http://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

What a week of weather we just had! So strange that we get a taste of all four seasons in the span of a few days. I truly hope that Spring has finally sprung upon us! If you are wondering when the average last frost occurs, you can check the statistics at www.GeorgiaWeather.net by looking at the data collected at various weather stations around the state. Griffin and Williamson are the two closest stations near us.

I looked at 21 years of data recorded by the Williamson station, from 1993 to 2013, and learned that the last frost date has been as early as February 20 (in 2012) and as late as April 19 (2001). Furthermore, the last frost date has occurred 10 times each in March and April, but only once in February.

What does all of this data mean? I think it means that we should be cautiously optimistic that Spring is here. I am not ready to plant anything yet, and I’ll be keeping my jacket and umbrella handy! In the meantime, today is to be enjoyed.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, Tuesday, March 17, here is my favorite Irish blessing:

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

I encourage each of you to join the “Pick Up Pike” or PUP Facebook page to follow efforts to improve the countryside by picking up litter along our roadways. Find out what you can do to get involved! It takes all of us to keep Pike clean.

Thank you for supporting locally grown agriculture and for choosing to purchase locally! We’ll see you Wednesday.

I hope everyone takes an opportunity to go out and enjoy today’s sunshine. After all, we’ll have an extra hour to spend in it, thanks to the return of daylight savings time. The Walter family is headed out to a soccer game. We’ll try not to get sunburned!

See you on Wednesday.

Thanks,

Beverly

Correction

Have you ever just had one of those days where you could not for the life of you say or do the right thing? Such has been the case for me today!

In the blog sent out this afternoon, I said that orders could be picked up Tuesday between 3 and 6 p.m. WRONG! Y’all know the routine – our pick up is on Wednesday (duh, Bev!) Thank you, Amy Vaughn, for helping me get back on track. Thanks everyone for giving me grace to show my “imperfect” side.

Hope everyone has a great evening, and we’ll see you on Wednesday!

Thanks,

Beverly
