Sign Up to Help The Wednesday Market

We need your help!

The Wednesday Market volunteers are looking for some helpful hands to facilitate our move into the new location. During the month of March, we will be cleaning, painting, making signs, working on the yard, and eventually – moving! If you would like to help, please let us know on Wednesday. We’ll have a sign up sheet where you can list your name, contact information and area in which you would like to contribute (i.e., cleaning, painting, etc.).

We are EXCITED about our move and hope that our customers and farmers are too! We’ll have more room, more parking, lots of shady trees – and hopefully – more customers and products.

Won’t you consider helping us meet our goals?

Thanks,

Beverly

P.S. I know I told everyone to contact Anna Evans in today’s weblog, but let’s allow her some space. She’s a really busy lady! If you give us your contact info on the sign up sheets, we’ll call you when we’re ready. Thanks.

Order Today and Tomorrow; News about Our New Location

Good afternoon.

The Wednesday Market is open. Please place your orders by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up between 3 and 6 p.m. Tuesday. Be sure to check the website for all of this week’s product offerings. Here is the link: http://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

Many of you have asked when The Market is moving. We now know and are happy to announce that we plan to be in our new location in April. We are moving into the little house just past the Pike County school system’s bus garage on Adams Street, not far from our current location. In fact, if you are used to turning down the side street and parking in back of the Board of Education office, you have already found Adams Street! The new location is farther down the street, past the old Zebulon elementary school and The Chandler Building. Look for a little yellow bungalow on the left. If you get to Eastview Cemetery, you have gone too far.

We are using the month of March to spruce up the new location and volunteers are welcome to help us! If you are interested, please contact Anna Evans. In the meantime, you can still find us at the little red brick building at the corner of Concord Street and Adams Street.

See you on Wednesday!

Beverly

What could be better on a dreary rainy day than creating something hot and tasty in the kitchen? That is my goal today! At the least, I have two birthday cakes to prepare – one for my husband and another for a friend who works at our favorite restaurant. Joe and Karina share the same birthday, Feb. 23.

Tomorrow night the boys and I are going to make one of Joe’s favorite meals: pork tenderloin with herbed roasted potatoes, fresh baked bread, and mixed green salad with homemade dressing. For a side vegetable, we will choose steamed broccoli or fresh spinach sautéed with garlic. And for dessert, we’ll have devil’s food cake with fudge frosting served with vanilla ice cream.

Joe loves flavorful food, and this menu is a showcase for the flavors that he loves: rosemary, garlic, red pepper flakes, oregano, and freshly ground black pepper.

Do you use herbs in cooking? Having grown up with a parent who shunned anything but plain meat and potatoes, I have enjoyed learning how to use herbs and spices to create all kinds of different dishes, savory and sweet. Here are just a few of the many herbs that are commonly used in cooking: basil, mint, rosemary, oregano, thyme, cilantro, parsley, chives, dill, sage, and tarragon. All of these herbs are available in dried form, but I encourage you to experiment with using fresh herbs whenever they are in season. And, fortunately for us within The Wednesday Market community, we can purchase these wonderful herbs from several of our farmers!

Here is a simple recipe for a tasty dipping sauce for hot, fresh baked bread. You can use dried or fresh herbs, and you can tweak the recipe to use more of the herbs you really like and less of the ones you do not prefer.

Easy Herbed Dipping Sauce for Fresh Baked Bread
Oregano
Basil
Rosemary
Kosher Salt
Freshly Ground Black Pepper
Red Pepper Flakes
Fresh Minced Garlic
Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Start with ¼ teaspoon EACH of oregano, basil, rosemary, and kosher salt, and mix together in a small dish. Add freshly ground pepper to taste, along with a pinch of red pepper flakes. Add about 2 cloves of freshly minced garlic. Top with about ¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil and stir gently to combine. Taste, and adjust seasonings to suit. This makes enough for about 4 servings (depending, of course, on how much bread you have and how much you like dipping it!). I always make a lot more because my boys really love this sauce.

Thank you for supporting locally grown agriculture and for choosing to buy locally. We’ll see you Wednesday!

Order Now; A Poem about Winter

Weather forecasters are predicting some wintry weather over the next two days for points north of us. With that in mind, here is a poem for you:

When it was Winter

by Eman Elbadawi

First, when the shadow stood
Behind the window
It wasn’t winter yet
Or it was winter –
No one could say for sure I knew:
It is winter
It’s very cold
But it dosn’t rain
And it seems it won’t.
Then suddenly it started to rain:
One drop
Two drops
The eye gazed
Behind the windows:
It rained
A hundred drops
A thousand
A million
A thousand million –
Until the world was clean!

As of this writing, it is anyone’s guess what tomorrow has in store for us. While my children would love to play in the snow, I hope that all we get is rain! No matter what Mother Nature sends our way, here’s hoping that you all stay safe, dry, and warm.

We’ll see you on Wednesday.

Thanks,

Beverly

Happy New Year from The Wednesday Market! It is Time to Order.

Good evening, and Happy New Year to everyone in The Wednesday Market Community! We trust that you had joyful holidays and are greeting 2015 with excitement and anticipation.

We thank our faithful customers who allowed us to “flex” our market day during the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. Thank you for letting us move ordering and delivery up a day during each of those holidays so that our market volunteers could focus on spending time with their families.

And, now we are back to “normal.” The ordering system is turned on. Please place your orders by Monday, Jan. 5, at 10 p.m. Orders are ready for pick up on Wednesday between 3 and 6 p.m. Here is the link: http://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

January 26, 2015, marks the 4th anniversary of The Wednesday Market. Thank you to all of our growers and producers and all of our customers for supporting our efforts to bring the freshest local products to market. We look forward to another great year of serving you!

Sincerely,

Beverly Walter and The Sunshine Girls: Anna Evans, Irmalee Wing, and Sharon Fox

Time to Order; Pick Up is on Tuesday This Week

Good evening to all of our friends within The Wednesday Market community. We trust that everyone had a Merry Christmas yesterday. We certainly did!

There is only one holiday left to celebrate in 2014, and that is New Year’s Eve. Due to the holiday falling on Wednesday, we are moving our pick up time and date to Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 3 to 6 p.m. Please place your orders by Sunday, Dec. 28, at 10 a.m. (This is the same pattern we used last week and during the week of Thanksgiving.)

This is the last opportunity to order from the Market in 2014, so please get your orders in as early as possible for the best selection. Visit the website to see this week’s product listings. Here is the link: http://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

We return to our “normal” schedule for the first Market of the new year, Jan. 7, 2015. The Market will be turned on for ordering late Saturday evening, Jan. 3.
