This week we welcome Double Hill Farm and their Happy Hogs back to the Market. Double Hill Farms is located on the Flint River in Meriwether County. Their mission is to provide fresh, locally grown, premium pork products that were hand raised in a healthy, happy and humane environment.

Did you know that you can now order Georgia shrimp from The Wednesday Market? That’s right! St. Simons Island Shrimp Specialist became a vendor here just this week. We are so excited!

We also officially welcome Suzanne Kozee and SunRidge Farms of Molena. You may have already met Suzanne, as she has sold some of her produce in person at the Market a few times.

To learn more about these new producers, as well as all of our other farmers and vendors, click on the “Our Growers” tab of the Market’s homepage. Please join us in welcoming these people and their products. We have several other new producers joining soon, and when they start listing their products, we will let you know about them, too.

As always, thank you for supporting locally grown agriculture and for choosing to purchase locally. We hope you are enjoying summertime!

Thanks,

Beverly

The produce the farmers are bringing to market is just beautiful, and our growing season is now in full swing! I am still looking forward to the first fuzzy peach of the season, though, and I cannot wait until the big juicy tomatoes are ripe.

At our house, we are nurturing a tiny plot of earth with one tomato plant (with three green tomatoes!), a squash plant, two stalks of corn, two lima bean sprouts, a cucumber plant, a pepper plant and a squash plant. We have lined the walkway to the front door with pots of herbs including parsley, basil, thyme, rosemary, and sage. We are looking forward to harvesting some of our own veggies. Y’all have heard me say it before, but I’ll say it again and again – I love summer!

Now, a reminder to all of our customers, farmers, vendors, producers, and readers of this weblog: We love hearing from you and are here to answer your questions and help you use the ordering system. Please, please, please, PLEASE when you contact us by email, include your name, email address, and a phone number at the end of your email. I have received several emails lately that did not include any contact information, and so I have not been able to respond. Emails sent to The Wednesday Market are electronically forwarded to me and the other managers, but do not retain the original “from” email address. By including your contact information, you can be sure that we will be able to respond to your questions and concerns.

Thank you for supporting locally grown agriculture and for choosing to purchase locally. We are going to have a great summer!

Open for Orders; School is Out and Summer is Here!

Good afternoon.

The Wednesday Market is open for orders. Please place your order by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up between 3 and 6 p.m. Wednesday. See the website for this week’s product offerings. Here is the link: https://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

Tomorrow is Memorial Day – the unofficial start to summer – and our remembrance of those service men and women who gave of themselves the ultimate sacrifice for our nation’s freedom.

This past Friday was the last day of school for my boys, soccer is on hiatus for a while, and we are so happy to have some freedom from our regular schedule! We plan to have some adventures this summer, including trips to the movies, visiting our kin in North Carolina, 4-H camp, and, inevitably, a soccer camp or two.

We also plan to have some adventures in eating! As you browse the Market this week, you will see a lot of summer produce being offered, including yellow squash, zucchini, peppers, and tomatoes, as well as a variety of fresh herbs. This is my FAVORITE time of year! The tantalizing flavors of real homegrown tomatoes, perfumey peaches, luscious watermelon, crunchy peppers and savory herbs inspire me to go to the kitchen and create delicious salads.

Caprese salad is divine in its simplicity. The components are fresh tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, springs of basil, balsamic vinegar, and kosher salt. Slice a tomato or two into fairly thick slices. Do the same with a ball of fresh mozzarella cheese. Alternate slices of tomato and cheese, slightly overlapping each other, on a platter. Pluck the basil leaves from their stems, stack them on top of each other, and roll them up from the long side into a cigar-shaped bundle. Using a sharp knife, slice across the bundle of basil, creating very thin ribbons of the herb. Sprinkle the basil over the tomatoes and cheese, then drizzle with some fine balsamic vinegar. Top everything off with a tiny garnish of kosher salt. Oh my goodness! I’m making myself hungry just thinking about it! If you like tomatoes, give this recipe a try and let me know if you like it as much as I do.

We hope you all have a great holiday weekend. Thank you for supporting locally grown agriculture and for choosing to purchase locally. We’ll see you Wednesday at the Market.

Thanks,

Beverly

Today is the first day of May! Can you believe that the year is flying by so quickly? My boys only have a few weeks of school left before this school term ends. I am always glad when our schedule slows down. We will have a few weeks off from soccer practice! That means we will have more time as a family to sit down together for dinner. Summer is an excellent time of year for our family to kick the habit of eating out and also for clearing our diets of processed foods.

If you are interested in moving away from processed foods, here is a great blog and website for you to check out: http://www.100daysofrealfood.com

This website is full of practical tips for cleaning up your diet and informative hints for cutting down on refined sugars and flours. The author, a North Carolina mom named Lisa Leake, shares lots of her recipes with readers and includes links to other blogs she finds helpful. Lisa is a big fan of locally grown agriculture! I’ll be trying some of her recipes soon.

We hope everyone has a restful Sunday, and we look forward to seeing you at the Market!

Thanks,

Beverly
