Is it just me, or is time speeding by? It seems only yesterday that the calendar turned over to January, and now it is April!

Spring is planting season. Whenever I think about vegetable gardening, I can’t help but remember my grandparents: Grandma and Grandpa Dean and Mamaw and Papaw Pickelsimer, all of whom lived in Fannin County, Georgia. Grandma’s garden had tomatoes, asparagus, and potatoes. Papaw’s garden had squash and green beans. And, although I can’t remember whose garden they came from, we had corn and okra, too. All of them were fabulous gardeners, probably more from necessity than by choice, but when they had more produce than they needed or wanted for themselves, friends and neighbors were bestowed with the extras.

Oh, the meals we consumed at their tables! Fried squash, fried okra, sliced tomatoes, green beans, mashed potatoes, cornbread, and biscuits were regular fare in both households. The food was not fancy, but it sure was fresh and bounteous, and tasted so good, especially when we washed it all down with milk from Papaw’s cows.

Even as they aged, Mamaw and Papaw continued to plant sizable gardens, and when we were teenagers, my sister Sharon and I would be sent to North Georgia to help them “put up” the garden. Mamaw’s specialty was canning green beans. Lord have mercy, one summer we processed so many green beans that our fingers were calloused from all the work of stringing and snapping! At the time, I didn’t think I ever wanted to eat green beans again.

Thankfully, my parents have continued the planting tradition. Mama and Daddy planted last week. Soon our favorite white half-runner green beans, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and peppers will be blooming. And, with any luck, this summer Mama and I will be in the kitchen, “putting up” vegetables, just like the old folks taught us. Thank you, Grandma and Grandpa and Mamaw and Papaw, for teaching us to grow our own food.

And, thank you to our farmers at The Wednesday Market. We look forward to a bounteous harvest this summer! We will see you on Wednesday.

Thanks,

Beverly

Trying Again - The Market is Open

Not meaning to interrupt your Easter celebrations, but I am just letting everyone know that the Wednesday Market is on now. I went through the same routine as I always do every Saturday night, and turned the Market on, but something didn’t “take”. Anyway, it’s on now.

Thanks,

Beverly

You may notice that Blissful Bonbons is missing from this week’s Market. Leslie Ratliff reports that her oven is broken so she has de-listed her items this week. We send our condolences – I know how it feels to be a baker and to have a broken oven! Hopefully, it will be repaired quickly and Leslie can get back to making her delicious products.

Easter is next Sunday. As you are preparing for your family celebrations, please consider The Wednesday Market for your eggs, milk, meats and other items you might need.

Thank you for supporting locally grown agriculture, and please keep our farmers in your thoughts and prayers this evening that the predicted frost does not damage their plants and trees.

Thanks,

Beverly

Concord Street Sweets is not listing this week. We have had a death in our extended family. My sister Kimberly’s beloved mother-in-law Carolyn Barnes of Griffin passed away yesterday from Alzheimer’s Disease. We will be spending time this week comforting the family and preparing for the funeral service and hosting out-of-town friends and family.

What a blessing it is to have such fine weather, especially during such a heartbreaking time for my sister and brother-in-law and their children. Springtime reminds us that there is a season unto everything in life. The clear blue sky, fresh green grass, bright flowers blooming, birds singing and bees buzzing are true reminders that winter does not last forever, and that life goes on.

Be sure to hug someone you love today!

Thanks,

Beverly

I just stopped by Freshway in Zebulon to pick up a few ingredients for some catering this week, and the store is packed with people. I mean, packed! As if someone said a blizzard is coming, except that people weren’t buying milk and bread. All of the registers were manned with cashiers, and the manager made an all-call for baggers to report to the front of the store. I’ve only seen the place so crowded this way a few times, usually only a day or so before Thanksgiving. So, what brought on this run to the store for huge cuts of meat and copious quantities of beer? Well, it’s the Daytona 500, of course!

A gentle reminder to those of you out there who are race fans, please place your Wednesday Market orders before you settle in for the long race. I hope your favorite driver wins.

Thanks,

Beverly
