Reminder: No Wednesday Market Today!

Dear Farmers, Customers, and Friends:

This is a reminder that there will be no Wednesday Market today, due to the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

We will go back to our normal ordering pattern on Saturday, when the system will be turned on.

We hope that all of you weathered the storm safely, and we look forward to serving you NEXT week.

Thanks,

Anna Evans, Sharon Fox, Irmalee Wing, and Beverly Walter

Hurricane Irma and The Wednesday Market

Dear Farmers, Customers, and Friends:

Due to the uncertainty of how the Middle Georgia area will be affected by Hurricane Irma, the Market managers have decided not to hold the Market this week. We just don’t know what challenges the storm may bring us in the next few days, and out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of our farmers, customers, and staff, we feel it’s best to cancel the Market this week.

We thank you in advance for understanding this difficult decision. Our hope is that the storm will pass over us without damaging homes, farms, and businesses, and that we can resume our normal ordering pattern next weekend.

Until then, we wish you peace. Be safe.

Sincerely,

Anna Evans, Sharon Fox, Irmalee Wing, and Beverly Walter

My family and I are going to spend the day out in the sun at my son’s soccer tournament. There will be an abundance of sun, so we have covered ourselves in sunscreen. Is everyone ready for tomorrow’s eclipse? I don’t have the special glasses with which to view the sun safely, so I’ll have to use an alternate method – like a pin hole in a cereal box or look through a colander to watch. Anyway, I hope you all have a safe viewing.

Thank you for your support of locally grown agriculture and for buying locally. We’ll see you at the Market!

Today is a special day in our family, as my parents are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this summer, and my siblings and I are sending them on a trip to see the Grand Canyon. Mom and Dad flew out this morning. We are praying for safe travels, blue skies, and happy adventures for them.

Concord Street Sweets is off the Market this week. In Mom’s absence, I will be making the milk run on Wednesday. Right now my plan is to list next week, and hopefully, list some NEW products. Stay tuned for more details.

And, finally, this Tuesday marks the end of the summer for my children, who start back to school on Wednesday. Stephen is entering 9th grade, and Charlie is going into 3rd grade. I don’t anticipate that anyone in the household will get much sleep on Tuesday due to the anxiety of Wednesday morning. Change is good, but the fear of the unknown is nerve-wracking! We will be learning a new traffic pattern, new school start times, new teachers, altogether new routines.

Stephen is taking Agriculture this year as part of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) curriculum. He will be a member of the FFA. I look forward to his projects, and we may share them with The Wednesday Market community.

In the meantime, we hope that everyone has a peaceful Sunday, and we’ll see you at the Market.

Thanks,

Beverly

Every morning on the way out the front door to my car, I walk past my herb garden. Planted in a row of clay pots along the walkway, these herbs give off the most delicious scents if you even brush by them and touch them accidentally. We have sage, oregano, rosemary, mint, and basil. Herbs are so easy to grow that some people may even consider them weeds, but to a serious cook, herbs mean serious flavor. Do you cook with herbs? Maybe you have always wanted to, but just don’t know how to get started. Here is a really informative link that will teach you everything you need to know about culinary herbs: http://www.cookinglight.com/cooking-101/essential-ingredients/all-about-herbs-slideshow

Regular readers of this blog know that my favorite season of the year is summer. I attribute my love of summer for having been born in June. Gazing up at a cobalt sky with white fluffy clouds makes me so happy. Even though I am not much of a gardener, seeing other people’s gardens gives me great pleasure. I love flowers and flowering trees and shrubs, especially our hundred year old Southern magnolia. And I love the bounty of the vegetable garden.

Is there not anything more sublime than a homegrown tomato? My favorite dish featuring homegrown tomatoes is caprese sald. Preparation is very simple – just slice a tomato, slice a ball of fresh mozzarella cheese, and alternate overlapping slices on a platter. Take a nice little handful of fresh basil, give it a quick, coarse chop and sprinkle it over the tomato and cheese. Drizzle a slight measure of good balsamic vinegar over the top and add a tiny pinch of coarse salt for seasoning. And there you have – my favorite summer dish! Now, if I could just master frying squash the way my Mama does…..That’s a story for a different day.

Have a great Sunday, and we’ll see you at the Market.

Thanks,

Beverly

Our gardens are in full production mode! The green beans in Mama’s garden need to be picked just about every day now. She has been putting them up in quart size canning jars. They will reappear at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. How wonderful it is to have homegrown vegetables in the late fall and winter.

The weather is so hot that I don’t much feel like heating the kitchen up to cook. I am satisfied with a pimento cheese sandwich or a tomato sandwich, but Charlie’s birthday is at the end of this week (he’s turning 8!), and he has requested some of his favorite foods. Last night he was delighted to sit down to a supper of glazed meatloaf, mashed potatoes, biscuits, tomatoes, cucumbers, and lady peas. Also on his list is chicken and dumplings. We’ll see about that later in the week.

We hope that you all are having a good summer, and we look forward to seeing you at the Market.

Thanks,

Beverly
