It’s supposed to be a beautiful day, although kind of chilly right now. We hope that you have a chance to get out and enjoy some sun. As for me and my crew, we’re headed out for a day of soccer.

This week we welcome Terrace Micro Farms to the Market. Bob and Kelli Hurd describe themselves as “two young people who raise chickens right outside of the Zebulon city limits.” They have about 250 chickens in their flock. The fowl have a nice home where they have full access to grass all day and a safe coop to sleep in at night. The types of chickens at Terrace Micro Farms include Marans, Buff Orpingtons, Araucanas, and White Rocks. Currently they have a variety of medium and large sized brown and green/blue eggs for sale to the community.

Warm weather, indeed Springlike weather, is forecast for this week. Are you enjoying the mild winter we are having? A lack of cold weather is not necessarily good news to Georgia’s farmers. If you are interested in learning more, here is a link to an article by Clint Thompson of the University of Georgia, published by AGFAX: https://agfax.com/2017/02/09/georgia-warm-winter-temps-spark-fears-of-potential-plant-diseases/

Is this warm weather making you anxious to start planting a summer garden? In the same article cited above, UGA Agricultural Climatologist Pam Knox provides this caution: "One thing we do know from this kind of weather pattern is that the chance of a late frost goes up since the atmosphere often swings more wildly than usual between cold and warm episodes. So don’t get too anxious to start planting if we have a warm spell because a cold wave could be just down the pike.”

To everything, there is a season. I am looking forward to the REAL spring! Until then, thank you for your support of locally grown agriculture and for choosing to purchase locally.

We’ll see you at the Market!

Thanks,

Beverly

Ordering Time is Upon Us Again; We Have a New Milk Runner!

This is Jennifer Adams’ last week as the milk runner for The Wednesday Market. Thanks to her volunteerism, many of our customers have had access to farm fresh milk, cream, eggs, ground beef, honey, cheese and other products from The Good Shepherd Farm. Jennifer is stepping down to pursue other opportunities. Thank you, Jennifer, for being part of our team, and we wish you all the best on your new endeavors.

Fortunately for all of our milk customers, Betty Dean has stepped forward to assume the duties of milk runner. And, for those of you who may not already know, Betty is my mother and my right hand helper at Concord Street Sweets. Having grown up on a farm herself, Mama is passionate about providing others access to fresh, wholesome products. Please take the time to thank Jennifer and Betty for their time and service to The Wednesday Market.

Some of you may have noticed that Twigg Hollow Farms is absent from the Market lately. Sandra Hayes is having surgery Feb. 16 and due to her health concerns, her activities are limited. She reports that Twigg Hollow may be back to the Market with vegetables in late April or early May. Sandi, we send love and peace and wishes for a speedy recovery!

We also send special greetings to Sharon Fox of Fox Hollow Farms who has been away from us for several weeks now. Sharon, we love you and miss you and hope that you are feeling better and will come back soon!

Concord Streets Sweets is absent from the Market this week, but will be back next week. We just have a little bit of catering to do.

Hang on to your hats, y’all, as the weather people say we’re about to get a third round of severe weather coming through this afternoon and this evening. Then, hopefully, this crazy Georgia weather will settle down some.

As always, we thank our customers for supporting locally grown agriculture and for choosing to spend their money locally. Take care, and we’ll see you at the Market on Wednesday.

Thanks,

Beverly

What a difference a week makes! Last Sunday we were in the middle of a deep freeze, and yesterday we had a record breaking high temperature of 75 degrees! That’s the thing about Georgia – if you don’t like the weather, wait around for a day or so, and it will change. Thankfully, my husband’s little patch of cabbages and broccoli survived the freeze, and we are looking forward to harvesting something green soon.

We hope you all have a good day, and we’ll see you at the Market.

Thanks,

Beverly
