Concord Street Sweets is off the Market this week. Tomorrow is Pike County’s first day of school for the 2016-2017 year, and we have an 8th grader and a 2nd grader to get back into their routines. Once they are settled, I’ll be back to the Market with all of our customers’ favorite baked goods.

I learned this morning that the weather man is forecasting temperatures in the 80s for this week, along with good chances for rain. We could certainly use some in Zebulon! Although other parts of the county have had significant rainfall in the last week or so, we are dry as a bone here. We have almost given up on the plants at our house. Hydrangeas are wilted, my herbs are drying up, and the tomato plant has stopped producing. Only the figs seem to love the heat and dryness!

Thank you for your support of locally grown agriculture. We hope you have a great Sunday, and we’ll see you at the Market.

Thanks,

Beverly

Need Shrimp?

The St. Simons Island Shrimp Specialist is delivering shrimp this Wednesday. If you have not already placed an order for shrimp since the last delivery, now would be a great time to do so.

Many of you may know that I live in an old house in Zebulon. What you may not know is that the house, when we bought it in 1998, came with 7 fig trees. That’s right – 7 fig trees! Someone in the house’s past must have really loved figs. Well, just this week, the figs started coming in, and there are a lot of them. During a previous year’s bumper crop, my mother and I made some incredibly delicious fig preserves seasoned with sliced lemon. The lemony preserves made a superb accompaniment to roasted pork.

I really hope that we’ll be able to make another batch or two of those preserves, but in the meantime, if you are like me and have a bumper crop of figs on your hands, here is a link with some ideas about what to do with them: http://www.finecooking.com/articles/in-season-fresh-summer-figs.aspx

Who doesn’t love pie? Everyone at my house has their own favorite flavor. Charlie, my 7 year old son, loves strawberry pie, while Stephen, the 13 year old, prefers key lime pie. And my husband Joe loves pecan pie, followed closely by any other kind of pie. Asking me for my favorite flavor of pie is like asking me which is my favorite child!

I wish I could invite all of you into my kitchen during the holidays when the ovens turn out apple pie, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and mincemeat pie. The aroma is heavenly, the kitchen is warm and comfy and cozy, and those who partake of the pies feel the love baked right in.

Holiday baking is time consuming and complex, but who has time for that in the summer? Summertime pies call for simplicity. Here is a great summer pie, featuring blueberries. Blackberries also work well in this recipe, which is adapted from a “Southern Living” cookbook. If you are trying to reduce the amount of sugar in your diet, you can cut down on or even eliminate the 1 cup of sugar called for, and the pie is still tasty.

Blueberry Crumb Pie

1 cup of sugar
1 (8-ounce) carton of sour cream
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 cups of fresh blueberries
1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 cup dry breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon butter, melted

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Pour blueberries into the pie shell and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Mix together the first four ingredients and spread over the berries. Combine the breadcrumbs, melted butter, and 1 tablespoon of sugar, and sprinkle over the top of the sour cream mixture.

Bake at 375 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the center of the pie is firm. Enjoy!

Thank you to the customers who ordered from St. Simons Island Shrimp Specialist last week. Bear with us as we work to refine an ordering pattern and delivery schedule for our newest producer. Orders for Georgia shrimp will be taken every week, but the shrimp will be delivered ONCE per month, on the first Wednesday of the month. You will not be charged for your order until you pick up.

On another note, it is finally TOMATO SEASON! I am doing my happy dance because I know I’ll be making caprese salad very soon! So far, my sweet husband Joe has harvested two luscious tomatoes from our sturdy plant. Thank goodness our little plot survived the ferocious storm that struck Zebulon on June 17!

Concord Street Sweets will be back on the Market soon.

Thank you for your support of locally grown agriculture and for choosing to purchase locally! We’ll see you at the Market.
