Summer is my favorite season for lots of reasons, not the least of which is that it is tomato season! Who can resist a tomato sandwich on white bread with just the right amount of mayo? Then there is the classic BLT: toasted bread, bacon, lettuce and tomato. It’s the perfect lunch for hot weather. My favorite preparation of fresh tomatoes is caprese salad. This dish consists of sliced tomatoes layered with slices of fresh mozzarella cheese and finely chopped bits of fresh basil. Everything is sprinkled lightly with sea salt and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. So simple, yet so delicious!

Have you ever bought tomatoes from the grocery store in the winter? How did they taste? How much did they cost? My experience is that tomatoes bought out of season are tasteless and expensive! That brings me to this week’s topic: eating seasonally. Why eat seasonally? The short answer is that fruit and vegetables just taste better when you buy them fresh in their growing season. Have you ever wondered what items are in season throughout the year? Here is a great resource for researching in-season produce throughout the U.S.: https://www.seasonalfoodguide.org/why-eat-seasonally
Thank you for supporting Georgia Grown. Have a great weekend, and we’ll see you at the Market.
Thanks,

Last week one of my co-workers gave me some yellow summer squash from her garden. As we were talking, she pulled out her cell phone and said, “You’re going to think I’m crazy when I share this with you, but I just have to show someone something that made me so happy this morning!” She passed her phone to me, and I saw a close-up picture of a bee curled up asleep in the petals of a hydrangea blossom. My friend said she purposely chooses plants to attract butterflies and bees, so she was touched to see the scene of a sweet little bee taking a nap in her flowers. I said, “Friend, I don’t think you’re crazy at all!”
Indeed, bees and butterflies are important to agriculture. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, “Three-fourths of the world’s flowering plants and about 35 percent of the world’s food crops depend on animal pollinators to reproduce. That’s one out of every three bites of food you eat.” Let’s be kind to bees and butterflies!

While Memorial Day weekend is touted as the unofficial start to summer, the true purpose of the holiday is to honor those who have died in military service for the United States. Have you ever wondered why red poppies are associated with Memorial Day? According to the American Legion’s website, after World War I, “The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem In Flanders Fields.” Click on this link to read the poem and to learn more about the American Legion’s distribution of red poppies: https://www.legion.org/poppyday/history
On another note, last week I shared an inspiring quote from Gary Black, and referred to him as Georgia’s agricultural commissioner. The remarks were made in 2020, when Mr. Black was still serving as Ag Commissioner. Mr. Black should have been identified as the former commissioner. Tyler Harper is the current Georgia Agricultural Commissioner, having taken office on January 9, 2023. I apologize for the error.
Thank you for for supporting Georgia Grown. Have a great weekend. We’ll see you at the Market.

We welcome Ferg’s Family Farm to the Market this week. You can learn more about them by reviewing their profile under the “Our Growers” tab on the website. Among the products they sell are eggs, fresh fruits, honey, vegetables, flowers, hanging baskets, and tomato plants.
As new producers join The Wednesday Market, we encourage our customers to support these local businesses. “The supply is there. The food is there. The quality is there. We just need to make sure the demand is there as well. Consumers often ask what they can do to help our Georgia farmers and the answer is simple. Expect Georgia Grown, ask for Georgia Grown and buy Georgia Grown.” – Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black
Have a great weekend, and we’ll see you at the Market!
