The 1st Annual Basic Agriculture Commodities Expo was held at Pike County 9th Grade Academy. Students were the teachers that evening as the community came out to learn about Georgia’s agriculture commodities in hands-on, fun, and interactive ways. Teams of young people were stationed throughout the school’s cafeteria, and each group shared facts and figures about one of our state’s commodities as attendees visited their tables.

According to 2020 data from The Center for Agribusiness & Economic Development at the University of Georgia, these are the Top 10 Georgia Commodities, in order of value:
p=. Broilers – $3 billion
Cotton – $727.8 million
Peanuts – $678 million
Beef – $663.4 million
Timber – $649.8 million
Greenhouse – $566.2 million
Corn – $358.1 million
Blueberries – $304.2 million
Dairy – $297 million
Hay – $291.2 million

Here are some pictures of our young people in action.

Many of the students who presented at the Expo are active in the local FFA and 4-H programs. To these talented and eager young people, I say keep up the good work! The world needs farmers like you.

To our customers, thank you for supporting Georgia Grown, and we’ll see you at the Market.

New farmers and producers are joining our market regularly. Please get to know them and their products. We encourage our customers to browse ALL the offerings. While we are sort of “in between” seasons for the next couple of weeks, there are still many products from which to choose. Cold crops such as spinach, broccoli, asparagus, chard, lettuces, and kale are still producing.
Eggs, dairy, meats, baked goods, live plants, micro greens and sprouts, honey, olive oil, bath and beauty products, and farm crafts are among the many items available through The Wednesday Market this week.

Thank you for supporting Georgia Grown. May you all have a glorious Easter, and we’ll see you at the Market.

Thanks,

Beverly

It’s time to get outside and enjoy this mild, sunny weather! What a welcome relief from the storms we had in the last few days. I wish we were at The Masters golf tournament today. The azaleas are in full bloom and the television screen doesn’t do them justice. Just once I’d like to go and see them in person.

Thank you for supporting Georgia Grown. We’ll see you at the Market this week.

Please donate your empty egg cartons to The Wednesday Market. Our egg producers are most thankful to reuse them.

Spring officially arrived today at 11:33 a.m. According to the website Almanac.com, in the Northern Hemisphere, the March equinox (also known as spring equinox or vernal equinox) occurs when the Sun crosses the equator line, heading north. This event marks the start of the spring season in the northern half of the globe. After this date, the Northern Hemisphere begins to be tilted more toward the Sun, resulting in increasing daylight hours and warming temperatures.

Yesterday our family spent the day fencing in a garden spot at my parents’ homeplace. Living out in the country as they do, my folks fight a constant battle with deer. Mom did not plant vegetables last year, so the deer turned to her yard and munched on hostas and hydrangeas throughout the summer. This gardening season we hope that the deer will be foiled by the fence! I am looking forward to a summer of tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, green beans and other fresh veggies.

Thank you for supporting Georgia Grown. We’ll see you at the Market.

Have a great Sunday.
